Keith's Thailand Journal

Keith's trip to Thailand in 1998 was one of his greatest adventures. We are thankful that Keith kept a journal of his travels. The journal was written for Keith's Grandmother Loehr, who asked him to keep a journal for her. Enjoy exploring Thailand with Keith!

Each one of us here today will, at one time in our lives, look upon a loved one who is in need and ask the same question: We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us- either we do not know what part of ourselves to give, or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us, but we can still love them. We can love completely, without complete understanding.

Elegy for the Outdoorsman
for Keith Loehr, 1969-1999

Where would our love not go to be alone

and chase slippery fish through swift rivers?

He followed the sun over mountaintops,

hiked the wilderness, felt moss on bare toes.

If he could find, climbing steep hills, the strength
of a leaping deer, how could his trouble

with papers and staples--his one imperfection--

keep him from turning with the earth?

Because he slept alone, and waking slow
on any morning, found no other face

next to his own with whom to secretly

fail, as we all must, he was never told,

the world does not die for moments of fear.
Even the artless design of offices,

their windowless cubes, must be reconciled

by that other's voice or wind-combed trees.

Four walls obscured his sky, but do not doubt:
Without body, finally, he dances--

rain on rooftops, a cardinal startled

from an oak tree's branch, a sleek, silver trout

splashing in the river,

jumping to touch the light.
